Andy Samberg - is Admiral Spaceship in Laser Cats 2

6/28/08 Update: Included a new imbedded video.
--------------------------------

Andy Samberg is Admiral Spaceship and Bill Hader is Nitro. They are back in Laser Cats 2!!!

This video features all the silliness of the first Laser Cats and some new gags to keep it fresh.

Nice effect with the futuristic Ping-Pong! Also good: the copy machine and Laser Cat White Board.

"And what do adults love? ... Politics!"

Jorma Taccone gets pelted with lasers in the title credits. Amy Poehler and Fred Armisen get taken out!

Jake Gylahall plays Dr. Scientist. "Looks like the end for you Andy...miral Spaceship!"

At 3:15, Dr. Scientist is firing with a real dog. In the other shots, he's using a cat.

"Use the sniper cat!"

Lorne Michaels struck gold with Andy Samberg

[Check out the bolded sections for interesting tidbits...]

Lorne Michaels struck gold with Andy Samberg

by Ethan Thompson

Andy Samberg and Lorne Michaels

Lorne Michaels has made some lame casting choices at Saturday Night Live over the years, but the addition of Andy Samberg has proven astute. Samberg’s comic persona serves as a point of identification for younger audiences, a break from the residual boomer sensibility that still permeates the show. Perhaps more importantly, his comedy fits the emerging online viewing habits of TV audiences, making a tidy addition to Michaels’ vertically-integrated comedy empire. Samberg provides an interesting case study in the convergence of television and online comedy. On the one hand, he exemplifies the kind of talent network TV must acquire in order to maintain audience share, but making his humor “fit” has meant more than just adding him to the existing staff. Samberg’s success has also come from an “old media” source, evidence of the lack of options for aspiring comedians. Posting videos on YouTube is a great way to find an audience, but as a South Park satire recently noted, “theoretical dollars” based on downloads don’t pay the rent.

SNL cast members typically achieve success through recurring characters or as host of Weekend Update, but Samberg’s has been established through a particular style of televisual presentation: video shorts produced with his longtime collaborators Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Though commercial parodies and other recorded pieces have been a mainstay on SNL for many years, Michaels has branded each Samberg video an “SNL Digital Short” complete with a black-screen intertitle separating them from the rest of the show. Audiences are thus cued that the televisual quality of the segments (and therefore their comic sensibility) will be different-more like viral videos than “old school” SNL.

Indeed, Samberg comes from the “new school.” He initially got attention for videos produced with Schaffer and Taccone in the early 2000s as TheLonelyIsland.com. In particular, 2001’s “Stork Patrol” serves as a blueprint for Samberg’s later SNL clips “Lazy Sunday” and “Dick in a Box,” which have done more to revitalize SNL than any appearance by Britney Spears or Hillary Clinton. “Stork Patrol” is a hip-hop parody, not in the sense that it makes fun of hip-hop, but because it uses hip-hop as a mode of comic address, deriving humor from the incongruity between the sexual desire so earnestly “rapped” and the object of that desire, a poorly constructed stork puppet. Samberg’s break-out short on SNL, “Lazy Sunday,” was similar, featuring himself with SNL vet Chris Parnell furiously rapping about The Chronicles of Narnia, Google maps, and Alexander Hamilton. Not only did the video make Samberg a star, but in the weeks after “Lazy Sunday” hit, YouTube’s traffic reportedly increased by 83 percent.

Just how much Samberg would be a deviation from SNL’s past was made evident early on in a Weekend Update “impression off” with Bill Hader. Introduced as new additions to the cast by Amy Poehler, both comedians look young in the segment, sporting shaggy haircuts and track jackets. But when the impression-off begins, a clear distinction is drawn between Hader, who performs adequate if out-dated impressions of Peter Falk and James Mason, and Samberg, who barely attempts an imitation at all, goofily saying “Hey, How’s it going? I’m Jack Nicholson, Whaaaaatt’sss Uuuupp?”

[NOTE: This was Andy's first appearance, so it was made evident from the very beginning.]

Rather than the studied approach to comedy and depth of cultural capital that Hader’s impressions suggest, Samberg’s cultural knowledge is barely knee-deep played-out beer slogans rather than dead (or at least old) actors. In fact, the skit bore an uncanny resemblance to Samberg’s actual SNL audition. According to an interview in New York magazine, “Every comic has to impersonate three celebrities at their SNL tryout; Samberg, who’s not big on impressions, remembers doing Jimmy Fallon, The Muppet Show’s Swedish Chef, and one line of Alan Rickman’s from Die Hard.”

Despite the distinction drawn between Hader and Samberg, the two have repeatedly appeared together, notably in the recurring “Laser Cats” skits in which they present a cheaply made Sci-Fi short to Michaels. Apparently shot in and around the SNL offices, the skits feature the duo wielding cats, which have evolved to shoot lasers out of their mouths, as futuristic weapons. Despite their enthusiasm, the production values of the props, special effects, and wardrobes fall terrifically short. That’s the joke, and Michaels doesn’t get it–much like he probably wouldn’t get why anyone would become enamored with a stork. The continued book-ending of the Laser Cats shorts as presentations to Michaels (in the third, he’s eating lunch with Senator Chris Dodd) shows that, rather than relying upon the lousy production values being funny, their deviation from the supposed-SNL norm (and Michaels’ lack of hipness) is made the joke.

Samberg’s digital shorts indeed fit online consumption much better than the standard sitcom. SNL itself is better online, because you can just look up the skits people are talking about around the water cooler (or sending around via email). NBC has aggressively fought to keep viewer-uploaded footage of its shows off YouTube. While that has made sense for shows available commercially, it hasn’t for shows like SNL where uploaded clips could be understood as promotions for the next broadcast. At a time when SNL’s ratings were stumbling, for instance, “Lazy Sunday” was downloaded 5 million times before NBC pulled it. Search for a Samberg SNL short on YouTube today, and you will either find somebody’s lame attempt to copy him, or be linked through to the commercially-sponsored Hulu.com, which provides access to a plethora of SNL skits, though not all of them, and no complete episodes. Samberg’s new skits thus drive viewers to SNL’s old back catalog, while not undercutting its DVD collections or syndicated episodes.

[NOTE: It sounds like he's not in favor of how NBC pulled their videos off YouTube. However, NBC is trying to compete with YouTube with their own video system.]

Samberg got his big-screen debut with 2007’s Hot Rod, a script that had reportedly been languishing at Paramount for years before Michaels convinced the studio to make it (with Schaffer directing) after the success of “Lazy Sunday.” The film is not a good fit for the crew’s humor, but at times Samberg shines through in moments more attuned to the aesthetic of the digital short. A prime example is an exchange between Rod (Samberg) and his brother (Taccone) in which a tender moment is made less so by setting their exchange of the phrase “cool beans” to a beat, as if the two are surprise-rapping. Samberg and Taccone reportedly edited the scene themselves, and placed it in the movie just prior to its final test screening. Hot Rod was no blockbuster, but as its commercial life continues on DVD, it’s worthwhile to note how scenes such as the “cool beans” exchange not only are more characteristic of online comedy than film comedy, but because of this, as ripped and uploaded by fans on YouTube, they serve as free promotion.

Samberg reportedly dreamed of being on SNL beginning at age eight, but he has only been successful on the show by doing digital shorts almost indistinguishable from the sort of things he, Schaffer, and Taccone were doing back in their “Lonely Island” days. Surely it would be difficult to persuade an aspiring comedian to say no to the big media co-optation exemplified by Samberg’s career. Will Ferrell may have set up his own comedy site (FunnyOrDie.com), outside the MSM, but he subsidizes it through his successful MSM comedies. Are there any other options for the aspiring convergence comedian? Clearly the posting of home-grown comedy is flourishing and as media scholars we can salute the fact that more people are making media and not just consuming it. (One great example of this is “Lazy Ramadi,” made by GI’s in Iraq.) Then again, we media scholars make a living pointing things like that out. But what do we hope is the payoff for those who make us laugh? Is independent success possible, or is big, old media still the ultimate way to get paid?

[NOTE: This article doesn't give credit to SNL's best efforts to integrate Andy Samberg into the show, like adding him to Kenaan's Deep Dish House, his MySpace skit, his Blizzard Man character, his Quatto character (the mutant from Total Recall), his Jack Johnson and Mellow Show impressions, his Kevin Federline work, his Sanjaya, and his Diablo Cody impression. Andy shows up rather frequently in all sorts of random skits.]

Andy Samberg - Is compared to Robin (Hero Song costume)

Andy Samberg's Hero Song costume gets compared to Robin:

Last night’s Saturday Night Live was pretty good, with the cast managing to maintain its surprising post-strike energy and wit. Host Amy Adams needed to be sedated though, anyone else notice? The highlight was a new superhero-spoofing SNL Digital Short starring cast member Andy Samberg entitled Hero Song.

Playing a Big Apple yuppie who is increasingly distressed over the city’s rising (and totally inexistent) crime wave, Samberg’s voice builds and crescendos like Gerard McMann’s ’80s smash “Cry Little Sister” from The Lost Boys soundtrack. Even better however is when his faux-empathetic yuppie decides to become a superhero while shouting the lines, “And so I rise from the ashes, the people need a superheroooooo, someone to save them” from a cliche rooftop. His costume pays homage to Chris O’Donnell’s completely homoerotic Robin from Batman and Robin, and also pays homage to a shiny, deflated party balloon. Let’s just say this guy gets what he deserves. New Yorkers will be especially satisfied.

Andy Samberg shows up in The SNL Summer Scorecard

We've got Andy's section bolded below. They mention Andy's upcoming movies, but they forgot to mention his next 3D animated film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

The SNL Summer Scorecard

For many years now, Saturday Night Live has been a 12-month, year-round affair. That is to say that during each summer hiatus of the television show, the program’s breakout stars take their sketch comedy selves to the big screen and milk it for all it’s worth.

After Baby Mama kicked things off in box office style in April with one-time Weekend Update co-anchors Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the front end of this summer is all about former big-time male stars of Lorne Michaels’ likely never to be cancelled franchise. We’ve got Adam Sandler as a goofy Mossad mousse man, Mike Myers playing a New Age second banana and Eddie Murphy doing another one of his multiple character deals (though why they changed the title of his latest from Starship Dave to Meet Dave is beyond me). Based on the evidence of the first two films and the promise of the third, Advantage Sandler.

Meanwhile, over on HBO, in a very welcome return, Myers’ partner in SNL crime Dana Carvey, who jumped into the recent MTV Movie Awards for a Wayne’s World revisit, debuted this past weekend a Santa Clara taped comedy special entitled “Squatting Monkeys Tell No Lies”. Tackling everything from a group of Presidents worshipping at the Reagan oracle to the touchy-feely methods of today’s parents, Carvey is in fine form, and though his film career is deader than a doornail (how is it that no one has yet hired Carvey to do the lead voiceover in a big animated feature?), he seems perfectly content.

Current Digital Short wizard Andy Samberg is doing his best to hit it out of the park in a long-form narrative, but this summer’s voiceover work in Space Chimps likely will be, at best, a ground rule double. But that’s fine; Samberg, via this, last year’s Hot Rod and next summer’s Ivan Reitman produced offering I Love You, Man, is slowly but surely trying to find his way to the Sandler sandlot. And while the musical version of Sandler’s 1988 hit The Wedding Singer departed Broadway in 2006, it is currently touring the U.S. as well as the U.K..

For Will Ferrell, in a summer that began with the June 3rd DVD release of Semi-Pro and continues with the July 25th theatrical release of Step Brothers, the big question is whether he, in partnership once again with fellow curly haired doofus John C. Reilly, can put a stop to the nasty and growing backlash. Thanks to a string of less than memorable recent comedies, the second best ever SNL George Bush imitator has many fans riled. ‘Please stop making movies! Please, for the love of God!!!! Just take the money you’ve made and live out the rest of your life in happy retirement, I beg of you!...’ pleads IMDB poster pstachio. Adds ssmith01 a little later in the same thread: ‘Heath Ledger dies and this useless jackass spews out four or five movies a year. This is how I know there’s no god.’ Ouch.

This explains why Ferrell, with his newest effort, has fallen back in step with producer Judd Apatow, his partner on previous efforts such as Anchorman and Talladega Nights. It’s certainly working for his SNL fraternity brother Bill Hader who, on the heels of Knocked Up, Superbad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, will pop up this August in The Pineapple Express. If anyone can rejuvenate the Ferrell onscreen shtick, it’s Apatow (and director Adam McKay).

For me, the best SNL news of all this summer was the confirmation that Jimmy Fallon is essentially getting out of the movie business, where he has had miserable luck, so as to take over the Conan O’Brien 12:30 a.m. hot seat in 2009. And don’t just take my word for it; here, again on IMDB, is how one poster (yamcofarms) frames Fallon’s upcoming fall comedy-drama The Year of Getting to Know Us: ‘I saw the world premiere of this film at Sundance and it is seriously one of the five worst films I have seen in my lifetime.’ Double ouch.

Andy Samberg - Voice Interview

Interview: Hot Rod’s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer

On July 24th, I had the chance to sit down with Hot Rod and Lonely Island trio Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. You can tell instantly that these three guys have been friends since 7th grade. They play off each other like they’ve been doing it for many years. The interview was probably the funniest roundtable I’ve done to date. These are not the type of guys who answer questions with any bit of pretension. They know who they are, they know why they are here, and more importantly they know how to tell a funny story.

You can listen to the full roundtable interview below. After the jump we have included a time-coded chapter listing, so that you can skip to the good parts. I highly recommend the story of The Whoopee Boys poster/screening, which begins around 23 minutes in.

The Karaoke version of this I found on YouTube posted by kshizzle27! Thank you kshizzle27! The original was by Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg from a Saturday Night Live song. Ok.. Andy Samberg - Is Jack Johnson on the Mellow Show

Jack Johnson loves us so much (and Andy Samberg), that he put Andy's Mellow Show skit on his website:

http://www.jackjohnsonmusic.com/home

It's from the Ashton Kutcher episode.

Here's a short blurb written about Andy Samberg doing Jack Johnson in the skit...

In a recent Saturday Night Live skit, resident goofball Andy Samberg plays singer/songwriter Jack Johnson as host of a talk show called The Mellow Show, where he talks about being mellow to fellow artists Dave Matthews and [Jason Mraz], and laments the passing of his many pets, including a Gore-Tex-wearing iguana that died of neglect and ''extreme mellowness.''

It's the kind of silly/funny parody of the Hawaiian-born, ex-pro surfer's image and music that should make both his detractors and fans chuckle. Obviously, Johnson has a sense of humor, as the skit is featured on his Web site.

Andy Samberg - Is Paul Rudd's gay brother (I Love You, Man)

Look for the bold parts...

I Love You, Man is a tsunami whirlwind of chaotic improv on set. Director John Hamburg, responsible for the cult hit Safe Men and the hugely successful Ben Stiller film Along Came Polly (don't argue the fact, it debuted at number one and stayed in the charts for weeks with a worldwide box office take of $171 million) has assembled a comedy all-star team that is more powerful than the 1992 United States Olympic Basketball Dream Team with this, his latest laugh-a-minute project. Members of SNL, Human Giant, The State, and Upright Citizens Brigade have assembled like the Justice League to give support to this "bro-mantic" behemoth being headline by improv's most handsomest and hilarious gentleman Paul Rudd and his buddy, cock show-off and Freaks and Geeks alum Jason Segel.

The premise behind I Love You, Man sounds like an untapped comedy goldmine. Its high concept idea of "dude love" is on par with this summer's Step Brothers, a film that most test screening audiences have called a "classic in the waiting". Here, the sensitive, Emo-centric Peter finds himself distraught on the eve of his proposal to longtime ladylove Shandi Dawson (played by Q's smoking hot daughter and The Office cast-off Rashida Jones). Pete has spent his entire life devoting himself to his romantic relationships, and now finds that he has no male friends. Thus, he sets out on a series of "Man Dates" to find his Best Man, which eventually leads him to Dave Negal, played by the always-affable Jason Segel. Segel described Negal as "Fifty percent Russell Brand and fifty percent my own loquacious brother." Rashida Jones went on to describe the guy as "not necessarily the friend you would wish up for your husband."

On Tuesday morning, we headed over to Paramount Studios to check in on this hardworking group of comedic actors and see just exactly what they were up to. Upon arriving at Stage Six, we found ourselves being stalked by none other than Andy Samberg. The SNL digital short super star and Hot Rod alum is appearing as Rudd's gay brother Ryan, a guy that only dates straight men and helps Peter to find his new male buddy. Throughout the day, Samberg would turn into a real pest, showing his age at about six years old. Obviously attention starved, the young comedic actor would go on to interrupt and join nearly every single interview that was conducted on the lot. Funny? Yes. Annoying? That, too. He quietly snuck away from our group to be fitted for his tuxedo.

A bazillion extras were waiting outside the giant barn door of Stage Six when we arrived. Director John Hamburg would be shooting the climactic Wedding Finale on this day, and it certainly felt as though we were truly attending the nuptials. Everyone was decked out in wedding attire. Rashida Jones, the ravishing bride, wore an elegant, yet simple dress. Three yellow flowers in her hair, she waited along with the extras, and it reminded me of an early morning sale at a convenient store. Everybody waiting for the doors to open.

J.K. Simmons, best known for his role on HBO's Oz as well as his role as J. Jonah Jamison in all three Spider-Man movies, crept into the crowd wearing a white T-shirt and sweat pants. He quickly hit the craft service table, nabbing a couple of vegetables to get his day started. In the film, he plays Paul Rudd and Andy Samberg's dad. Jane Curtain is playing the wife and mother, but she had yet to arrive at this time.

We were soon ushered into the back of the stage and through the set. Inside, the place looked like your average everyday white wedding. Numerous tables were set up complete with prop cake, prop champagne, and prop flowers. Extras and on-screen family members milled about in front of a stage where the camera crew was set up. The band OK, Go! stood, ready to perform under the moniker Taste Like Chicken. This is the wedding reception band that both Jason Segel and Paul Rudd would soon be joining on stage.

...

Huddled in our own little circle, we were soon met by Jon Favreau, hot off his Iron Man success. He is taking a break from his behind the scenes duties to play a small supporting role in "I Love You, Man". He is the Maid of Honor's husband, and she is being played by Jamie Priestley. Here is what he had to say about being in the film:

Jon Favreau: Yeah, it was pretty interesting. I am definitely a supporting character and this is a big ensemble comedy. There is a lot of sitting around in your little trailer. It was like right after Iron Man and I'm on it, and everybody was like 'Why are you here?' I said to Robert [Downy Jr.] 'It's really weird to go from directing a big, big movie, and going around the world with you for three weeks, and having the red carpet rolled out for us all across Europe, Asia, Australia, and then you come back. You are sitting in your little trailer doing a little comedy.' He says 'It's the best thing you could do. Chop wood and carry water.' It's very easy to lose your bearings when something very wonderful happens, or when something really devastating happens. It tends to throw your whole life off. I know when I've experienced that in the past it throws you off. You lose your bearings. It was very nice to come here and work for a director like John Hamburg, who is a really good guy, and it's a really great ensemble of performers. It was great just to be able to dive into something where all I had to worry about was being funny, knowing my lines, and being a good scene partner.

What makes you a good Alpha Male?

Jon Favreau: In this movie? I don't know. I think there is a little bit of that in all of us and you just play that out. Paul Rudd plays a guy who is very sensitive, so it's very fun to play the opposite of him, and just make his life a living hell.

Are you getting in any bar brawls in this?

Jon Favreau: No, I'm not that kind of Alpha Male. I'm just more like a shitty, insensitive, angry person. The real key is to just be a guy who lets anger dictate their inner thoughts. If you just find things to be angry about it's very easy to be an asshole. That's my key to the character.

Next up for a chat was bodybuilding legend Lou Ferrigno, who was also hyped about his upcoming participation in another comic book feature The Incredible Hulk. Here is what he had to say about his participation in I Love You, Man:

Are you playing yourself in this one?

Lou Ferrigno: Yes. That is correct. It is another version of me. This is a great romantic comedy. It is completely different. It is a movie you have never seen before, because it deals with a lot of sexuality. The director is banging the max out of everyone. We get a chance to see so many funny scenes, because we have so many funny characters. My storyline has to do with the selling of my house. It had to do with the whole concept of the other characters respect for me, and how I interact with the other characters. It is extremely funny.

And you get in a fight with Jason Segel?

Lou Ferrigno: Yeah.

Do you kick his ass.

Lou Ferrigno: Looks pretty obvious, I do think.

Are you going to be doing some dance moves in this? We heard the wedding band singing a song about you.

Lou Ferrigno: Yeah. We filmed the dancing yesterday. It will be whatever they put in the film. Everybody is going to be dancing.

Are you a pretty good dancer?

Lou Ferrigno: Yes.

What about doing the comedy?

Lou Ferrigno: I love doing comedy. I did comedy for seven years on The King of Queens. I'm excited about doing this, because you are going to see a different version and side of me that you've never seen before. Also, I have always had an ambition to do Dancing with the Stars. I think this movie is going to put me on the map. We have a lot of beautiful brides maids dancing. We have this whole group dancing. When you have that much excitement, you never know what is going to come out of it. Plus, everyone is cheering, "Come on! Come on! Come on!" They want you to go, go, go! It can get out of hand. It was a good thing that there were a few gurneys here last night. They had to take someone to the hospital. There was a guy in there that is eight-four years old, and he was in there dancing too.

Next up, Joe Lo Truglio joined us for a few words about his supporting character High-Pitched Guy:

How goes it?

Joe Lo Truglio: It goes very well. I'm a little sore; there's been a lot of dancing going on with the big wedding scene. But it's going very well.

Your character has a high-pitched voice?

Joe Lo Truglio: Yeah, my character is "High Voice Guy". I think I do have a name; I discovered a little nametag at the wedding on the table. (Laughter) But "High Voice Guy" has a really high voice, and it's not really explained why - which I like. He's just one of those guys who, when he starts talking, you just have to kind of cringe. You do have to cringe. There's no "kind of".

Can you do it for us.

Joe Lo Truglio: (In falsetto) Oh, it's way up here. It's way up here. It's way up here, and he goes to Galaxy games and tells them to pass the goddamned ball, and stuff like that. And a lot of the people [at the game] were not happy with me screaming. (Regular voice) For literally an hour-and-a-half. We went to an actual [Los Angeles] Galaxy game, and it was a lot of fun, but a majority of the people there didn't know I was doing a character. They weren't that thrilled with this guy who couldn't stop screaming like that.

So you were hoping you weren't going to get your ass kicked in the parking lot.

Joe Lo Truglio: Exactly. I had to kinda rush to my car and drive away quickly.

Who's the better dancer: you or Ferrigno?

Joe Lo Truglio: Ferrigno. Now, what answer did you think I would give to that question if he was reading this? (Laughter) In all seriousness, that's been one of the biggest thrills of working on this, because I loved The Incredible Hulk. It was on right around the time when I was not able to go out on Friday nights back in '78. I grew up on him, and it was a thrill meeting him and working with him.

Has anyone shown up in Hulk-green makeup.

Joe Lo Truglio: Not yet. I was thinking about it, but I didn't want to make him angry. You know the deal.

The high voice character was written into the script? It wasn't a character you'd come up with before?

Joe Lo Truglio: No, John had written that in there. I just took a shot at it, and managed to keep it up there without blowing anyone's ear drums out or my voice box out. I managed to keep it going.

How does he get invited to the wedding?

Joe Lo Truglio: In the movie, Paul plays a character who doesn't have any male friends, and so his brother Andy Samberg starts setting him up on "man-dates" with guys from his gym. And I'm one of those guys. I'm that guy who goes to the gym, like, seven days a week, but only works out maybe two minutes a day. He mostly walks around with his weight belt and goes, (in high voice) "What's up? You need a spot? I can totally spot you. Give it everything you've got!"

Is he gay?

Joe Lo Truglio: (Laughs) He's not. He's straight, but it's questionable. I will say that. It's ambiguous as the film goes on.

So all the guys he goes on man-dates with get invited to the wedding?

Joe Lo Truglio: Yeah, he ends up getting invited to the wedding. He ends up, in some strange way, "friends" with them. Paul doesn't have anyone, so these guys, even though they're not the most interesting people or dates to have, they come to the wedding anyway.

That's it for this round of I Love You, Man interviews. Stay tuned for more with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel in the near future. I Love You, Man will hit theaters in January of 2009.

Paul Rudd thinks Andy Samberg is a media whore

Andy Samberg interrupst Paul Rudd's interview.

They are both set to appear in I Love You, Man in January 09.

Andy part is bolded below...

I Love You, Man Set Visit: Paul Rudd

ComingSoon.net visited the set of DreamWorks' upcoming comedy, I Love You, Man, which opens in theaters on January 16, 2009 and stars Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Jaime Pressly and Rashida Jones. We had a chance to chat with Paul Rudd, whose character discovers as he's about to get married that he has no male friends and goes on the hunt for a best man.

ComingSoon.net: It looks like you can really play the bass guitar.
Paul Rudd: I can't, I can play a couple of those songs though, I tried to learn "Limelight" on bass and "Tom Sawyer" and I figured out the very basic… (co-star Andy Samberg interrupts the interview by standing behind Rudd) Oh God, he's such a media whore, you know what I mean?

CS: Looks like you guys are having fun.
Rudd: Actually, I've never met him.

CS: He hangs around.
Rudd: I was trying to formulate some other twisted joke, but I'll go back to the bass playing, yeah, I tried to get that "Limelight," it's not a really kind of generic way of playing, I could do enough to get the calluses going anyway.

CS: Are you a fan of Rush?
Rudd: I do like Rush, yeah, when I was a kid they scared me a little bit because I saw the video of "Tom Sawyer" and Geddy Lee just had his hair hanging down, there were certain guys like Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick also that I was just kind of freaked out by them. Yeah, those musicians really rattled me. And then "Tom Sawyer," I was like "Why is it called 'Tom Sawyer,' it just sounds so dark and evil," and then I got a little older and then I kind of went through this phase where I bought "Moving Pictures," that record, and then I was like "Red Barchetta," that's where it's at, and I went through a little Rush phase and then I got totally of course kind of into them years ago, and kind of like "The Spirit of the Radio" I would play it in my car really loud, so I was really nervous to meet them anyway.

CS: Did you have scenes against them, or are they just playing on stage?
Rudd: No, they're in the movie and we didn't have any scenes where I engaged with them, I was just a fan dancing in the show, but I got to meet them, and Jason and I actually interviewed them and I was nervous and like, "How do you interview Rush?" They seem also to be really a band that has shied away, they've really lived the words of "Limelight," living in the limelight, it's surreal and they can't pretend that a stranger is a long waited friend, I just kept thinking that when I was trying to buddy up to them, but they were very funny and very friendly, and big fans of "Team America." They're really funny guys like they were very nice and yeah, they were really cool, and I don't know how the topic of "South Park" and "Team America" came up, "Team America" and they all went crazy and started talking, and quoting it, and it was just really weird to be exchanging "Team America" quotes with Neil Peart.

CS: So are you and Segel man pals the same way your characters are?
Rudd: Yeah, I think we get along pretty well, we will do these little extended bits and runs that no one will ever enjoy except us, that's outside of the movie, hopefully not just in the movie, probably a few, but yeah, we get on pretty well.

CS: You've done movies with him before.
Rudd: Yeah, this is our third one, the first one was "Knocked Up" and that was actually where I met him and we didn't really have a lot of stuff to do in that movie, "Sarah Marshall" there was a lot more, and that was also really fun besides the location and where it was shot, I mean that was truly like, "You guys just say whatever you want," and so I think that we really started laughing and kind of really clicking on that movie and I was really excited that he was doing this movie.

CS: Can I ask you a question about being in Hawaii? I was just there for the junket for that and the surf instructor said that if they ever see you that they were going to beat you up because they were upset about your portrayal in that film.
Rudd: Oh yes, yeah, I thought that they would beat me up for my ability to surf.

CS: No, they said they saw it and were really disappointed that you played him like a stoner dude.
Rudd: Well, I think that's where people really have to have a suspension of disbelief that a surf instructor might actually smoke weed.

CS: The nice thing about "Knocked Up" is that Jason's character has no idea that he hates you, or why he hates you because he's into your wife.
Rudd: Yeah, he's way into my wife in that movie, that is quintessential Jason Segel that he could just do that creepy stare that lasts a little too long, and it could be very funny, but also unsettling, and he would do that with Leslie Mann in that movie and then he would look at me like probably these surfer guys that wanted to kill me.

CS: Is there some of that in this, is he kind of playing that?
Rudd: He's created a completely unique character in this movie. I mean, the one thing I like about both of our characters is that we're both guys, but we wear our hearts on our sleeves, and he has no problem acting in ways that might not be considered stereotypically macho, and he knows how to pronounce aoli, as do I, and I think that says it all.

CS: Do you think this movie is going to start a trend with man-dates?
Rudd: Probably not, does that happen, there is friend finder, just finding male companionship, those might be different sites than I'm thinking of.

CS: You could try them and get back to us.
Rudd: I will, give me your email addresses and I'll send you updates on man-dates.

CS: Craigslist is pretty good for that too.
Rudd: It is? You're starting to reveal something here, I've never been to Craigslist or Myspace.

CS: Facebook?
Rudd: I'm really behind on this, everybody I know has these pages, and I've tried to, but I don't have a password so I can't get on, I don't have an account.

CS: Why don't you have guy friends?
Rudd: I've always been kind of a girlfriend guy, not that I'm particularly weird or anything, it's just that I've always been in long relationships and now that I'm kind of in my mid-thirties. It's really exactly said, I don't even know how old I am, well post-college, I have a career and now I'm getting engaged, and during this engagement, Rashida Jones, who plays my fiancée, you know calls all of her friends that are going to be bridesmaids, and I'm not calling anybody to tell them the news. My parents are sleeping, I'll tell them tomorrow, I don't really have any close friends that I would share this news with, and so she says, "Why not," and I said, "I don't know, I guess I just kind of put all of my energy into my relationships," and so that's kind of how it happens that I realize for the first time, I never thought I was missing anything, and so then I have to try because I think she's weirded out by it, so I have to go out and try to find some friends.

CS: Is there a Vegas sequence somewhere in this?
Rudd: This might be the only movie I've done that doesn't have a Vegas sequence.

CS: And ironically Jon Favreau is in this.
Rudd: I know, that's true, I think the whole thing takes place in Southern California.

CS: Adam McKay recently mentioned something about wanting to get an "Anchorman 2" going, I don't know if he was joking or not, serious.
Rudd: I saw that, I think that it would be awesome, I would be in there for sure, and I emailed him afterwards, I think he was serious. I don't think there's a script or anything like that, I don't know if there's been any ideas, and it was so fun to do and I saw him recently and we were just talking about what a blast that was, so hopefully.

CS: That film was kind of ground zero for what is going on now with of a lot of Judd, the freedom to make the kind of films he's making, and for a lot of you guys, it just kind of exposed you to a wider audience so now you can kind of mix and match and do these kind of all star comedy ensembles.
Rudd: Yeah, it was really the most incredible thing to be a part of that, and it changed my life for sure, these last few years all these movies I've worked on have stemmed from that really, that crew, and also they've been a lot of fun. Since "Anchorman", it seems like working with Judd, there's a way of making them that's different than anything I'd ever worked on up to that point, and creatively it's fulfilling in ways that other things aren't, and I'm just blown away by how funny all those guys are, to sit and listen to McKay and Will Ferrell talk is so intimidating because it's so crazy and funny and smart.

CS: What's next?
Rudd: I have no idea.

CS: One day at a time.
Rudd: We finish this in a couple weeks I think and then I don't know, there's talk of this strike, so we'll see if that actually happens. I hope not, but I kind of wanted to take a little time off, I feel I was kind of overdue, I worked on a movie last year that we're gonna do about a week of reshoots on, to add some additional scenes for it and that comes out, I have no idea when.

CS: Is that the David Wains film?
Rudd: Yeah, it's with David, the working title is "Little Big Men," I don't think that that'll be the actual title of the movie, I don't think the title has really been decided.

CS: I remember that film being set up at first Luke Greenfield was going to direct and it went through several permutations.
Rudd: It went through several, yeah, a lot, I think even before Luke Greenfield was involved. Then it was several writers and then I wrote a version of it, and then David came on and we worked on a version of it together, and so it was kind of constantly changing and yet actually I think at the end of the day it turned out pretty well, we had a screening of it, and seen where it's at right now, I think everyone feels pretty good about it, so hopefully it'll work out.

Anna Farris and Andy Samberg are going to share meatballs (Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs)

Anna Farris reports in this interview that she's going to star with Andy Samberg in the 3D animated film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

This will be Andy's second animated film, after this summer's Space Chimps.

I think it's because Andy Samberg has a lot of leverage with today's youth and YouTube generation, so a lot of producers want to use him for family fare like Space Chimps and Cloudy.

The blockbuster will be the next from the studio that made “Open Season” and “Surf’s Up,” and is based on the 1982 book by the wife-and-husband author/illustrator duo Judi and Ron Barrett.

From the article (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/06/13/exclusive-anna-faris-andy-samberg-to-star-in-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs/):

Between their big-time work on shows like “Saturday Night Live” and “Friends,” and twisted characters in such films as “Just Friends” and “Hot Rod,” Anna Faris and Andy Samberg have proven themselves to be two of our most animated funny people. Now, both are about to become real-life cartoon stars.

“I’m doing an animated movie when I get back called ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs’,” Faris revealed to MTV News this week on the Albuquerque set of “Observe & Report,” an upcoming comedy co-starring Seth Rogen. “It’s a kid’s book that Sony is adapting into a great big animated feature.”

The blockbuster will be the next from the studio that made “Open Season” and “Surf’s Up,” and is based on the 1982 book by the wife-and-husband author/illustrator duo Judi and Ron Barrett.

“It’s me and Andy Samberg,” the “Scary Movie” actress said of the lead voices in the flick. “I’m actually not sure how many people I can talk about, because I’m not sure how many people are signed on. But let me just say I’m doing a voice, with a lot of great comedians.”

Targeting a March 27th release date, the film will build on the book’s brevity by digging deeper into the origins of Chewandswallow, a town that rains breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

“It’s actually only loosely - very, very loosely - based on the book,” Faris explained. “But it’s about a small town that rains food, basically. So hamburgers come down, and ice cream, and [the residents] have to figure out a way [stop it]. Eventually, it gets more and more dangerous, and they have to figure out a way to stop the satellite machine that’s raining food.”

“I play the lead female, she’s a weather girl,” Faris teased. “So maybe I could take some tips from a real journalist, such as yourself! It should be really fun.”

As for the animation, she explained: “[The character] does look like me, but they’re going to tweak it all. It’s an amazing process…they start the animation process and then they record my voice, and then we go back in and tweak it all…they’ll take mannerisms that I’ve created for the character.”

After tons of TV shows and feature films, Faris is excited to give an on-screen performance even more animated than usual. “It’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” she said of being in a cartoon. “And I’m very flattered that I get to be a part of it.”

Andy Samberg - Thumb Wrestles

Yes Andy Samberg thumb wrestles:

So serious!!!

Andy Samberg - Is an interupting cow (I Love You Man interviews)

I Love You, Man: The Set Visit!

I'm at one of those weddings. You know, where you don't know the bride or groom very well, where the alcohol isn't flowing and you're not exactly sure why you were invited in the first place. And I didn't bring a gift. Thankfully neither did anyone else.

My online colleagues and I have been invited to the set of the new DreamWorks comedy I Love You, Man, premiering January 16, 2009, and today is the day they're shooting their final scene – what seems to be the wee hours of a wedding. On a stage Paul Rudd and Jason Segel are singing Rush's "Tom Sawyer" into a microphone that's not on, accompanied by a bouncing Rashida Jones. Guests are bobbing up and down to the sound of nothing and Andy Samberg is trying to hit on Thomas Lennon. I told you, by way of weddings, this is a weird one. And still no wine.

I Love You, Man may at first glance look like the newest I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, but rest assured, it's a movie about platonic love between two men. Paul Rudd's character realizes as he's about to get married that he has no male friends, and his fianc̩e, played by Rashida Jones, encourages him to find a best man. Rudd goes on a series of man-dates and, undoubtedly, hilarity ensues. After auditioning various candidates (read nutjobs), like high-voiced guy, he finally finds his best man in Jason Segel, which is why today the two of them are strumming their guitars, playing "I Want It Now!" fromWillie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory between takes, and hanging out with Grammy-winning OK Go, who are portraying the wedding band. As the day progresses and the guests linger in the wedding tent, we meet Рget this РLou Ferrigno, who wants to be on "Dancing With the Stars" next season. (Hear that ABC?) Making this probably the best fake wedding ever.

The fact that this scene is taking all day is clearly also taking a toll on Andy Samberg, since he throughout the day chooses to interrupt every interview taking place. Occasionally he will mark his presence simply by staring, prompting Rudd to shake his head in mock anger, "He's such a media whore…" but for Segel he throws in a "You smell like potpourri" and "Jason, when you were over at my house, you yawned, and the wallpaper curled." Is it any wonder that director John Hamburg (Along Came Polly) lets these guys ad lib all day? J.K. Simmons, who plays Rudd's dad, tells us the improvising is the norm on this set as well as the highlight, "[The best part is] sitting around two different dinner tables for a total of, like, four days just blowing take after take because we were all just cracking each other up to much." Oh dear, what would the Coen brothers say?

Andy Samberg - Crashes John Hamburg's interview

Andy Samberg has a third movie! He's playing a supporting character in the January 2009 film, I LOVE YOU, MAN.

Andy parts are bolded below! Andy Samberg loved 27 Dresses!!!!! (See below)

Here Andy Samberg crashes John Hamburg's interview...

Andy:

John Hamburg (to the left of Ben Stiller and Jennifer Anniston):

On Set Interview: Director John Hamburg's I LOVE YOU MAN!

Written by Robert Sanchez
Thursday, 05 June 2008
On the set of I LOVE YOU MAN this week, the IESB, along with a group of online journalists, spoke with director John Hamburg.

Hamburg has got a couple of goofballs on his hands (Paul Rudd, Andy Samberg and Jason Segel) in the film and has to somehow get them to work everyday. How does he do it? Read our interview with Hamburg in its entirety below - plus some funny interjections by Samberg!

I LOVE YOU MAN is set for release January 2009 and tells the story of a man (Paul Rudd) about to get married who actively seeks out a male friend to be his best man for the wedding.

Let the MAN DATES commence!

IESB: So, there are a lot of “-” in this film?

John Hamburg: Yes.

IESB: A lot of “-”, or a lot of “-”?

John Hamburg: Yeah, there are a lot of people having sex. But that is all done off camera. Everybody has hooked up. The F-bomb is dropped in this film. I try to get people not to say it as much. We will be getting an R rating, because every other word you hear starts with an F. But I like to save it for when it is really powerful.

IESB: What do you think about Andy Samberg? (Andy is standing behind John)

John Hamburg: Andy is a -. (He turns to see Andy standing there) Oh, my -! I had no idea!

Andy Samberg: You never do.

John Hamburg: No, Andy is a really decent guy. He is funny. He is cute in those shorts he does on SNL (Andy waves him off). I love Andy, I think he is a comic genius. He is great. He is really funny. He is a very good actor. On SNL he does sketches, and those digital shorts. You haven’t really seen him act. But he is super funny. He is real. He knows how to play.

IESB: How come you haven’t mentioned “Hot Rod”?

John Hamburg: Like I said, he hasn’t been in that many movies. “Hot Rod” was great. But its not like he went on to make “Hot Rod” 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Some of that movie is super funny. Anyway, he’s got some chops. He’s been great. Plus we flew across the country together. Both of us were sitting next to each other, and he made sure that we watched “27 Dresses”. We had to push play at exactly the same time so that we could watch it in sync on our little video players. He was obsessed about that. He didn’t want any of us to get a scene ahead. We had a delightful time. We drank Bloody Maries. We had a real Sex in the City girls’ night across the country.

IESB: Percentage wise, how much footage is completely unusable because you are all cracking up?

John Hamburg: Ninety-eight percent. I think only two percent of it is workable. No. Definitely people laugh a lot on the set. The actor always feels bad about laughing during a take. But I love it. It means you are having a good time and you are enjoying yourself. There is nothing wrong with laughter.

IESB: How far into the shoot are you?

John Hamburg: We are almost done. We have a week and a half left.

IESB: Who is the big RUSH fan on set?

John Hamburg: Paul Rudd is a big RUSH fan. In real life, are you saying?

IESB: Yeah.

John Hamburg: In real life, Paul is the big RUSH fan. Rashida has gotten into it. Segel wasn’t a big fan to begin with, but now he has gotten into them.

IESB: That is interesting, because his character in Freaks and Geeks played Spirit of Radio.

John Hamburg: I genuinely did not know that when we started. I had seen a couple of episodes of that show. I even directed a couple of episodes of Undeclared, which was made after that. But one of my crew members said, “Oh, there is that scene in Freaks and Geeks where Jason plays RUSH.” When I was writing this script, I hadn’t thought of the actors yet. I had just thought of the script. I had this guy that played the drums. And then we cast Jason Segel. Originally, he was a drum player, but when I saw that scene you are talking about, I changed it. Because I wanted this to be a different character.

IESB: How did the casting process work on this film? Did you get Jason and Paul, and then they were the magnets that got everyone else involved?

John Hamburg: Yeah, we started with them. Then we worked our way through. We were fortunate that a lot of people wanted to do the movie. The people we asked wanted to do it. It was a good thing. It worked out quite nicely.

IESB: There is a lot of improving on this movie. Does it take the film in directions that you didn’t intend? (Andy appears behind John once again)

John Hamburg: (To Andy) What’s up, man?

Andy Samberg: I just want to hear what you are saying. (Andy sticks his phone in with the rest of the interview tape recorders)

John Hamburg: So, the improvising. Is there a lot of improvising? Yeah, definitely. Scenes get expanded. Andy isn’t that good at improve, so his scenes kind of suck.

Andy Samberg: You don’t have to address it. I just want to be a fly on the wall. I’m not even here. Not even!

John Hamburg: Sure, the improv takes the film in some different directions. But I think that if you see the finished film and read the script, it will be quite similar. But these guys bring a lot to it. Not Andy. But most of these guys are really funny. And when you get a ton of really funny, smart people together, they elevate the scene. You will have something that is just four lines long, and that will get really elevated. More things happen. This is sort of free and open to that. And it makes good things happen.

IESB: What was the genesis of the project? When did you get involved?

John Hamburg: I got involved about a year and a half ago. A version of this movie had been around for a number of years. And I had read a script with a similar concept about five years ago. It was being developed. Then a few years ago, I said to myself, “I have my own version of that story to tell.” So I got together with the producer, and here we are.

IESB: Do you know what you are doing next?

John Hamburg: I’m not sure. There is a movie called “The Troubleshooter”, which I may put together. I may direct it. I like to do them one at a time. They take so much time and energy. When you are writing, and directing, and producing, there is a lot of stuff to do. I like to finish one, then while I am editing I will think of the next one.

IESB: What is “The Troubleshooter” about?

John Hamburg: It is a comic thriller about a mild mannered home theater installation artist that witnesses a murder. Then he has to go on the run, but he is completely unprepared for the forces that are after him.

IESB: So he is installing people’s sound systems?

John Hamburg: He is the guy that comes to your house and puts in your plasma screen. He witnesses something he shouldn’t, and he basically doesn’t want anybody to bother him. He is a big movie buff, so he knows all of these thrillers. Suddenly he finds himself in the middle of an actual thriller.

IESB: So, he uses all of these movie cliches to stay one step ahead of the murderers?

John Hamburg: He doesn’t really use movie cliches. He is aware of murders and movies, then he’s suddenly in a real life mystery. He wants to find out what is happening. It is a comic Hitchcockian man on the run movie.

IESB: Besides having RUSH on the soundtrack, what other kinds of bands are we going to hear?

John Hamburg: That is the only band that we officially have. Today we were fortunate enough to have the band Okay, Go! They are the wedding band, which is really amazing. Hopefully they will do a song for the soundtrack. Again, the only band that is officially on board is RUSH. While we are editing, we will start to put more music in.

IESB: What is your favorite Man Date from the movie?

John Hamburg: I couldn’t pick. There are so many ridiculous, fun dates. One guy comes in and plays Rugby with Paul. He has a date with Tom Lennon. Those two really connect, but it doesn’t end the way he wants it to. There are a lot of fun ones. It’s like having to pick your favorite child. I love them all for different reasons.

IESB: It's great that you are able to bring in all of these guys from The State.

John Hamburg: Well, I have been friends with these guys for years and years. It is fun to be able to work together on something. We have members from so many great comedy groups here. We have guys from The State, from Human Giant, from SNL, The Upright Citizens Brigade. Just all of these really smart, funny and talented people. It is fun everyday. There are new people here everyday to make you laugh.

Has Andy's hair become uncool? Does he need a haircut? Lorne Michaels has told Andy repeatedly that he should cut his hair (Andy revealed this in an interview).

Is Andy Samberg taking off the bag or putting it on? I think he's taking it off to run it through the security check.

Andy, you can run, but as soon as you need to fly, the paparazzi will get you!!!! (Unless you start hiring a private jet.)

So, Andy goes to the airport again. This time he flies with his harpist, Joanna Newsom.

The article:

Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg and his harpist girlfriend Joanna Newsom depart from Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday.

We can just imagine what Andy says to his buddies back in New York on the show set about his lady friend: "You know what they say about harpists... they can pull your strings! Get it?" (cue buddies groaning)

Seriously though: The guy grew up in Berkeley, California. We can see why he digs the hippie chicks.
